Word History
Hydrant comes from an ancient Greek word, hydor, which means "water." A number of other English words contain the letters hydr-; most of them have something to do with water. Hydrogen is a word invented by a French scientist in the 1700s. It means "producing water," because hydrogen forms water when it is mixed with oxygen.
