definition 2:  to be superior to; surpass.
example:  The quality of his painting transcended the works of all others of his day.
example:  My concern for my children’s well-being transcends my other cares.

1. the part or share of something that is to be distributed to, that maximally can be distributed to, or that habitually is consumed by, an individual or group.
During the war, each family received a monthly quota of meat.
No more wine, please; I’ve had my quota for this evening.

2. a quantity of something that is required or expected from an individual or group.
The company sets production quotas for each quarter of the year.

3. an assigned number or percentage of people or things that can or must be used or admitted.
Quotas were set in the 1920s that severely restricted the number of Asian immigrants to the U.S.

example:  My grandfather has occasional memory lapses.
example:  I’m sorry for not introducing you; my shock at seeing him there caused me to have a lapse in good manners.

definition 1:  to decline from or fail to meet an established or accepted standard, usu. temporarily, unintentionally, or in a minor way.
example:  They never lapsed in their faithfulness to each other.

definition 2:  to drift slowly or gradually into or out of a state or mental condition.
example:  The injured woman lapsed into a coma.
example:  After his wife died, he lapsed into despair.

definition 3:  to come to an end, as a right or benefit in force during a specified period of time.
example:  Her license to practice dentistry has lapsed.
