transitive verb
definition 1:  to perceive differences or distinctions between.
example:  Some persons cannot differentiate blue and green.
example: For the exam in music, we had to differentiate the styles of various composers.

definition 2:  to indicate or constitute a difference between.
example:  The birds look quite similar, but markings on their heads differentiate them.

intransitive verb
definition:  to become distinct or different from something else.
example:  The turtles of this species differentiated as they evolved on two separate islands.
