definition:  a person who is a member of a religious congregation but not of the clergy.
example:  As the minister was suddenly taken ill, the church service was held by a layman.

definition 2:  a person who is an outsider and unskilled with respect to a particular profession, esp. medicine or law.
example:  For a layman, he has quite a sophisticated understanding of the functioning of the brain.
