Word History
American explorer Robert Gray named the Columbia River after his ship in 1792. The entire area around the river was then called "Columbia." When the United States and Canada drew a boundary through Columbia in 1846, the Canadian part became known as British Columbia. British Columbia became a Canadian Province in 1871.
