algebraic fraction a fraction that has at least one algebraic variable or expression in the numerator or denominator, such as 1/x.
common fraction a fraction represented by a numerator, above a horizontal or diagonal line, and a denominator below. (Cf. decimal fraction.)
complex fraction a fraction in which either the numerator or denominator is itself a fraction.
decimal fraction a fraction whose denominator is some power of ten, indicated by a decimal point before the numerator, such as .7, equaling seven tenths, or .015, equaling fifteen thousandths. (Cf. common fraction.)
improper fraction a fraction in which the denominator is smaller than the numerator.
