complex sentence a sentence composed of a main or independent clause and one or more dependent or subordinate clauses, such as "This is an independent clause, whereas this is a dependent clause".
compound sentence a sentence composed of two or more independent clauses, which are usu. linked by a conjunction, such as "The sky darkened and the wind howled".
dependent clause a clause that is syntactically not a complete sentence and is used typically as an attachment to an independent clause. A dependent clause adds additional meaning to the independent clause and functions as a noun, adjective, or adverb.
main clause in grammar, esp. in a sentence that contains more than one clause, a clause that can function by itself as a sentence; independent clause.
semicolon a punctuation mark (;) used to separate independent clauses within a sentence, indicating a less distinct break than that marked by a period, or used to separate clauses or phrases containing commas.
